Lazy, vain, and selfish is no way to go through life son. But it is how to be an end user.

Title: The First 15 Seconds
Context: You only get one chance at a first impression. Even with software. Especially with software.
Synopsis: Users are lazy. Users are vain. Users are selfish. Which is why, just like with teenagers, you have to love them all the more to help them get past their lazy/vain/selfish phase so that they can blossom into productive, generous, and mature contributors to the common good. At first you must appeal to the baser instincts of your user, showing him/her that you take them seriously, you understand their special needs, you know what they are going through. Once you have proven your commitment to them, you can then move on to establishing the longer term us/we/our symbiosis. Like most relationships in life, the most successful and long lived ones require significant investments of time, effort, and empathy. Oh, and presents never hurt either.
Best Bit: “Instruction manuals, laborious unpacking, extensive sign-up processes, and other friction points that obstruct getting a quick return from engagement are alienating.”
