Title: Yes Is For Wimps. Get Used To Hearing “NO”.
Context: “No” is not an insult. It is a challenge.
Synopsis: We hear “no” all the time in our business. “No we can’t do that.” “No users won’t get it.” “No, I will not sign off on a 3 week business trip to Maui for you to experience team building surfing lessons.” I can’t speak for that last “no”, but all of the other ones should not be considered as the end of a conversation but rather as the start of a the next one. “No” can get you closer to the right answer and “yes” is not always all it’s cracked up to be either. If all you hear is “yes” then you probably aren’t doing enough raging against the status quo. So the next time someone tells you “no”, don’t despair, work even harder to change that “no” into a “yes”. And then book your flight to Maui…
Best Bit: “If you’re not hearing “no”, you’re not really getting your work out there enough, pushing what’s possible, pushing yourself.”
