Context: We are visual thinkers yet tend to only communicate verbally. That’s just crazy talk.
Synopsis: I know, I know; you can’t draw. Which is fine because we aren’t talking about drawing, we are talking about sketching – which is a horse of a totally different amount of specificity, representative fidelity and communicative purpose! Sketching is an important part of any functional brain dump. The mind is great at producing ideas but not so great at recording them. Remember the last time you sat there for 40 minutes trying to remember that brilliant idea you had that morning in the shower? Yeah, that. Your imagination and creativity work at literally the speed of light, which is often too fast for your memory to cope. That’s why it is so important to visually and outwardly record your ideas. Not only so that you can revisit them later but also so your brain can study, digest and draw new connections between items from its previous output. Hardcopy is a great backup tool as well as a fabulous instigator of fresh thinking. So do more of it.
