Title: A Brief Rant On The Future Of Interaction Design
Context: Everyone has a vision of the future. The crap part about them is that most of them were only visionary 2 visions ago.
Synopsis: Your iPad is pretty cool right? You love it right? Well good, you’d better, because that’s it. We’re done. All user interface work is finished. Nothing ever gets any better than touchscreen technology. How do I know? Because every single goddamned vision of the future video that some goddamned tech company comes out with makes every goddamned thing that you will ever own in the future into a goddamned touchscreen. Your phone? Touchscreen. Refrigerator? Touchscreen. Car? Touchscreen. Toilet bowl? Well…let’s not get too crazy. But seriously, the things you love to do – the things you are really good at and enjoy being good at – almost none of them exist behind the artificial wall of the touchscreen. Life happens on our side of the glass so shouldn’t we be trying to coax the things on the other side out here with us rather than shoving more and more of our wonderful stuff across the shiny and smooth touchscreen barrier? I say yes. Now turn off the touchscreen device you’re reading this on and go open some jars or brush your teeth or whittle a small rodent out of a block of cedar. You’ll be glad that you did.
Best Bit: “Are we really going to accept an Interface Of The Future that is less expressive than a sandwich?”
