Title: Rap Genius Explains Why Worse is Better
Context: Right now you’re too stupid to design that feature perfectly. And I mean that as a compliment.
Synopsis: So one day this guy decides to build a website that let’s people expose the often obscure meaning of rap lyrics. Stupid idea right? Yeah, stupid like a really stupid fox that just raised $17 million in VC cash. But here’s the thing, the stupidity may just be the thing that works so well for the Rap genius website. Rather than planning everything out from day 1 and spending countless hours designing every last detail of the site, they chose another option: build the “shittiest” stuff that they had to build and went with it. Of course this flies in the face of every “attention to detail”, “it’s the little things” axiom that we’ve been force fed time and again. Maybe there is truth in the “worse is better” school of thought. The real problem is having the guts to believe in the big picture instead of getting bogged down in the details. Give your bad ideas a chance and some good ideas are bound to follow.
Best Bit: “There’s a reason you can’t do the perfect thing right now: You probably don’t even know what it looks like.”
