Title: Psych 101: The Psychological Basis for UI Design Rules
Context: Sometimes – just sometimes mind you – user experience can be more science than art.
Synopsis: Man this is an ugly presentation, but it is even more insightful than it is homely. Much like user experience in general, we often forgive aesthetic sins as long as the underlying structure resonates with our expectations. Jeff Johnson is a UX OG who has probably forgotten more about the psychology behind quality systems design than most of us could ever hope to learn in our lifetime. The truth is, we probably don’t pay enough attention to the underlying human psyche when crafting experiences that we narcissistically think are so unique that no cognitive prerequisites could possibly apply. But we ignore the biological wiring of the human animal at our own peril. After all, in many ways, mankind is just another system that we need to understand in order to properly design tools that seamlessly interoperate with it.
Best Bit: “User: ‘I’m in a hurry, so I’ll do it the long way.'”
