Title: Discrimination by Design
Context: Design is pretty fly…if you’re a white guy.
Synopsis: Women? People of color? Disabled? Poor? Sorry, I don’t seem to have a persona for any of you. But I’m sure you’ll all be fine with this design targeted to middle class, white men. I mean if it’s good enough for us, it’s got to be good enough for you. As long as you can afford your own sports car, a luxury condo, can see/hear/move without restriction, and—most importantly—pee standing up. Heck, maybe not all of these user requirements apply to you, but surely some of them do, or at the very least you wish they did, amiright? I mean you can’t please all the people all of the time (pretty sure a white guy came up with that saying). So rejoice fellow non-white, non-male, non-wealthy, non-abled humans, this is what universal design looks like. At least to us white guys.
Best Bit: “In a tech world that hires mostly white men, the absence of diverse voices means that companies can be blind to design decisions that are hurtful to their customers or discriminatory.”
