Title: Design In Tech Report 2015
Context: Design no longer contributes to business success, it drives it.
Synopsis: Let’s be frank: it’s a helluva good time to be a designer in tech. It’s not always easy, but it certainly is exciting. The attitude toward design as (at best) a contributing factor to better technology is rapidly evolving towards a “design driven” mindset. How do we know this? Simple, follow the money. Investment is flowing into businesses that live design, and away from those that spackle on design as an afterthought. This is not to say that technology no longer matters. It matters more than ever, but it is to say that well designed technology will beat out great technology alone every single time. And even more importantly, technology no longer drives adoption, user preference does, and the fact that design drives user preference is undebatable. And the fact is that usage has always driven design supremacy within markets (look at the automobile industry since the 1950’s). So yes, I repeat myself; it is a helluva good time to be a designer. What do you do for a living?
Best Bit: The sheer number of successful startup companies that have been founded by designers in the past 5 years.
