Title: Breaking up with the User in User Experience Strategy?
Context: There are only two types of people who have “users” for clients; us, and drug dealers.
Synopsis: Semantics can be a helluva thing. You design stuff, but do you design for users, or customers? Perhaps you design for an audience or even a cohort. Who knows. More importantly, who cares? Does it matter what the nomenclature is as long as the intent is right? Would you design any less of an experience if it was for a “user” than for a “customer”? Of course not, but much as oncologists and anesthesiologist practice varying form of medicine so too can the design profession specialize which might lead to more targeted outcomes. As for me, I don’t care what you call yourself, just don’t dare ever refer to me as a “user”…
Best Bit: “When people raise their head from their devices, that’s when they become sentient beings called customers, who are more important to a business.”
