Title: Nonsensical UX: The Strange Case of an Elevator Touch Screen
Context: In UI—as in life—just because you can, certainly does not mean that you should.
Synopsis: We’ve undoubtedly all seen it: the inexplicable UI. You stand there staring at a screen or panel or controller, brain feverishly trying to unlock the logic embedded into the interface that once discovered will allow you to perform the (usually) simple task you are trying to accomplish. You squint. You think. You curse. You wonder what the hidden rationale was that drove the decision making that led to such a conundrum. Was there any? Surely there was, and you must be at fault for missing the obvious. Occasionally it clicks—the inner secret of the design mystically appears revealing its secrets to you and triumphantly allows you to complete the task at hand. But sometimes the connection is never made and you are left there wondering, “what did I ever do to deserve an interface like this?”
Best Bit: “Just because a current technology makes sense and is expected in one context doesn’t mean this technology will make sense in any context.”
