Title: Everyone Deserves Great Design
Context: A brief manifesto on the need for universally beneficial and demonstrably good design.
Synopsis: Sometimes we look at design and treat it like a cute puppy; we “ohhh” and “ahhh” over it without every stopping to think about if there’s anything more to it than a veneer of cuteness. We accept often cartoonish caricatures of the intended users and pat ourselves on the back for liking a product that may or may not be in any way useful to them, fully accepting that it holds no value for ourselves. Sure there is value in good design, but we are usually more than happy to conflate price as the more representative aspect of worth. We all need to hone our critical eye when evaluating design as a desirable trait in our products, our lifestyles, and our world. The zeitgeist should not drive our idea of what a valuable design is, our sense of right and wrong without question should.
Best Bit: “The most misleading proposition is the notion that offering a useless product or service for free to people in crummy situations will save the world.”
