Title: iOS 7 User-Experience Appraisal
Context: Lots of hype around iOS 7 usability improvements. But how much of it is warranted?
Synopsis: As we play our never ending game of “keeping up with the latest OS improvements”, our most recent challenge comes via Apple with the release of iOS 7. Flat design! Reduced reliance on iconography! More gestural navigation! These are but some of the breathless enhancements being pushed out of Cupertino these days. But are they all good for users? One does not need have the ability to channel the ghost of Steve Jobs to echo the familiar Apple refrain of “who cares?” Apple will do what Apple believes is right and you’ll like it. Sure you may have to unlearn old patterns before you can even begin to comprehend the new ones, and good luck trying to connect the dots on some of the application icons between iOS 7 and previous versions, but it’s all for your own good. Really. What type of troglodyte dares apply usability standards and consistency to the latest Apple creation? I would run a search and tell you the answer to that question if only I was able to find Spotlight in iOS 7…
Best Bit: “Whether app designers will know how to create the right tap affordances in the absence of proper buttons still remains to be seen.”
