Title: The Three Threats to Creativity
Context: Being able to promote and sustain a culture of creative innovation requires us to understand the pitfalls as well as the how-to’s.
Synopsis: Short post from the Harvard Business Review that posits the 3 most important requirements of a truly creative workplace: get smart and creative people who are passionate about what they do and empower them to realize their greatest ideas. Xerox PARC is of course the seminal example of this type of “creative hotbed”, and even if their best ideas were never capitalized in a home-grown business sense, none of the people who worked there would trade that experience because being able to think and discover at will is really what drives employees, not how many widgets they worked on ultimately get sold. Ask yourself: what can your employer do to help you overcome the threats to your creativity?
Best Bit: “According to the Labor Department’s most recent stats, productivity is up. But stretching fewer employees to cover ever more work in our job-starved recovery is no way to run the future.”
