Book: The Conference of the Birds

Even the greatest designer will never achieve design perfection. Even the lowliest designer will never stop trying.

Title: Let’s talk about margins
Context: The guy talks about margins, but what he’s really referring to is life itself.
Synopsis: There are an infinite number of details in everything you make. Design is the practice of figuring out which of these details are the ones worth obsessing over. Is it the font you choose? The paper? The page margins? The tiny space between a word and trailing em dash? Yes, yes, yes, and yes. You do not design a book, you design the details—the component parts of a book that on aggregate yield a superior book. And don’t be fooled, this microscopic deliberation is not easy, it is not fast, it is not even permanent. Perfection is certainly the goal, but it is not a stationary one so perfection—or more accurately: the illusion of perfection—is attainable only in theory. This does not mean you should not strive to achieve the perfect margin, but you should accept the intractability of it.
Best Bit: “Giving a shit does not require capital, simply attention and humility and diligence.”
