Title: Spotify’s Design Lead on Why Side Projects Should Be Stupid
Context: There are no stupid ideas. Only stupid people too stupid to turn a stupid idea into something great.
Synopsis: There are 2 types of great idea. The first kind is the one everyone instantly recognizes as great. You communicate your thought and people understand it and want it. This almost never happens. The much, much more common type of great idea is the stupid idea that everyone looks at and points at and laughs at because it is so preposterously stupid. These great ideas exist all around us. Heck, you probably have a few stupidly great ideas just sitting around right now gathering dust, afraid to do anything with them because, well, they’re stupid. How lucky you are! Most smart people would kill to have the good fortune to have a single stupid idea to work with. It’s an embarrassment of stupid riches! So get out there and do the smart thing with your stupid idea: make it great.
Best Bit: “When you treat something like it’s stupid, you have fun with it, you don’t put too much structure around it. You can enjoy different types of success.”
