Other peoples’ ideas don’t automatically suck? Who knew?

Title: Who Is on the UX Team?
Context: Great user experience comes from more than just user experience designers.
Synopsis: It is easy for UX teams to become territorial about their jobs. I mean everybody is always giving us their opinions and telling us what they want in the products we are working on and how we should be doing our job. And we are the ones who get paid to come up with these ideas, not them. We know what we are doing. That’s what we get paid for, right? Well, maybe – just maybe mind you – we should spend less energy fighting turf battles and more spend more time including these other people in our design process. The truth is that other product team members are also quite knowledgeable about the stuff we are working on, and the overall success of any project can only benefit from their solicited input. This is not a question of everybody having an equal say as to what goes into a product, but rather a full vetting of all ideas to arrive at the best possible outcome. UX designers are the best positioned to manage the process of understanding and implementing all of this information, but to think that we are the only ones capable of coming up with these ideas is pure folly.
Best Bit: “We’ve found the teams that look more towards cross-individual skills are better at producing great designs, giving the team more flexibility.”
