User experience is all about fun and games. You’ll just have to take my word for it.

Title: The Elements of Player Experience
Context: Life is a game. So let’s start designing products that allow us to play games all day long. No, no, not Farmville…
Synopsis: There is a growing trend across many HCI disciplines to introduce the mechanics of play and competition into day to day activities called “gamification”. This is a pretty dumb name but the idea has merit in as much as supplying people with experiences that they enjoy can – and should – drive user satisfaction as long as the purpose of these “games” sync with the desired outcomes designed by the product stakeholders. The point of any well designed game is to achieve something. Fortunately this is the same objective of most meaningful products as well. However, sharing an end-game vision does not make the path to achievement synonymous across disciplines. Yes, there is much that we can learn from the world of game design, but let us never forget that our ask may make the mapping of our designs onto a gaming methodology in and of itself, a very challenging diversion.
Best Bit: “…the lines separating game design from software UX design are growing fuzzier and less important.”
