Title: Motion and The Clay of Interaction Design
Context: Let your fingers do the walking. And the flipping. And the scrolling. And the resizing. And the…
Synopsis: One thing that these emerging NUI (natural user interfaces) ask of UX designers is an understanding of how people physically manipulate objects. As gestures begin to permeate the interaction vocabulary between users and digital artifacts, the traditional single point of contact between “real” and “virtual” becomes impractical. The mouse (and its ilk) ask us to funnel all of our intent through a distinct area, often within very tight, pixel level tolerances. On the other hand (no pun intended) multitouch interfaces allow us to relax the precision of the user’s tool set, changing the metaphor from technical drafting to sculpture, trading step-by-step instruction for choreographed improvisation. Add “motion design” to your list of things to become adept in. Your users will thank you for it.
Best Bit: “What is clear is that sketching & prototyping now requires a new methodology.”
