Title: HOW TO: Develop Ideas That Will Disrupt Your Industry
Context: Stop trying to fix problems. Fix the things that people think are working.
Synopsis: What do mismatched socks, crappy tasting energy drinks and small, dirty rental cars all have in common? They are all successful innovations in product and service verticals where no one knew any new ideas were needed. The worst thing that can ever happen to your job (and indeed yourself) is to become a cliché. How horrible it must be to wallow in yawn inducing success day after tedious day. Stop being content with what works. Make what works, work in new and exciting ways. Look at things differently and then look at them again different from that. If you and your competitors do everything exactly the same way, how can people tell you apart? Don’t aspire to be the other guy, don’t even strive to be better than him, strive to be different. Novel and new trumps same and old any day of the week.
Best Bit: “So, what was the problem that the solution addressed? Well, there wasn’t any problem, and that’s exactly the point.”
