Title: Creative Types: Embrace Chaos
Context: Malcolm Gladwell discusses creative chaos using his hair as a visual aid. Just jokes people! I kid because I love.
Synopsis: Creativity is usually a messy process. Not “I wish I had used a drop cloth for this” kind of messy (although it is often that) but rather “going off onto 20 different tangential, seemingly unrelated paths of exploration” kind of messy. And that’s OK. Hell, it’s better than OK, it’s freaking great! Why? Because that’s how new and cool things get invented, by recombining the detritus of our creative processes into previously unconsidered manifestations of the ideas bouncing around inside our head and pouring forth from our hands and mouths. Do not fight the chaos, embrace it and learn to use it to your advantage. Chaos is your friend. Your messy, messy friend…
Best Bit: “That embracing of messiness and understanding its contribution to the creative process is something that writers and creative types, artists, whatever have got to cultivate, have to learn to be comfortable with.”
